The
walleye fishing has been looking up in our Beautiful
Brainerd Lakes Area with each passing day! Over the past
week the Gull Lake catch has been increasing from a few fish
a day to catching 6-7 keepers each outing. The weapon of
choice at this point is Shad Raps (SR-5), trolling on the
edge of the weed line in about 12 feet or so of water.
Another effective way to go after them is using a Lindy
Rig with a spinner and a leech or crawler. The fish have
been found mainly on the Cinosam Flats and the Rock Pile.
The big sun fish are being found on the Hay Field in about 8
feet of water. Just look for the weeds to come to the
surface and drop an anchor. Use a hook and sinker set up
topped with a crappie minnow or a piece of a crawler to
catch these. Norhtern Pike are being caught on the weed line
(8-12) on the Cinosam Flats as well as trolling around
Squaw Point, Shad raps and sucker minnows have been
effective.
Good Luck and keep your line wet!

Walleye fishing has moved into more of a mid-summer pattern
on Gull Lake. The days which provide some walleye "chop" and
a bit of cloud cover have been the best by far. There are
some fish to be found along the deep weed edges which on
most lakes means from 14 to 16 feet of water. There also is
another group of walleye which have moved to deeper water.
Most fish that are being taken are coming on a Lindy Rig and
Chub combination. Some fish are also being taken after dark
pulling crank baits.
Bass fishing has been very good on almost all of the
Brainerd Area lakes and some very nice Northern Pike are
also showing up. The bass are still responding well to a jig
tipped with a soft plastic bait. Many of the Bass are a bit
deeper, generally in the 8 to 12 foot range.
Good luck and stay safe

Bluegill, Pumpkinseed & Green Sunfish Are Biting!
The panfish and bass fishing has been phenomenal as of
recent, with nice sunfish being found around the Cinosam
Flats, the hay field, and Love Lake. The big sunnies have
been being caught on crappie minnows as well as night
crawlers and pan fish leeches. Look for weeds over the side
of the boat in 6-12 feet, and when you see a large amount of
weeds near the surface, pitch an anchor over the side and get
ready for some major action! As for Northern Pike, they are
still being caught trolling around Squaw Point (Gull Point),
as well as the Cinosam Flats, I would suggest an SR-5 Shad
Rap trolling in 6-10 feet on the edge of the weed line.
Good Luck!

July 3, 2010
Walleye action has slowed considerably on most of the area
lakes which is typical for this time of year. A few fish are
still being caught on the deep weed edges with Lindy Rig and
minnow or leech combinations. A good number of Bass are also
occupying the same areas so there is plenty of action but
not always the Walleye you may be looking for.
Bass fishing is very good especially on somewhat calmer days
when throwing a jig and plastic worm or a jig and minnow
into the deeper weeds can be done. In fishing this technique
it's likely that a Northern Pike will also show up.
Good luck and be safe

With the warm weather the panfish action has gotten hot as
well! Families have been having a blast catching sunfish
(about 1 in 3 is very large) in Love Lake. A few fishing
guests have been treated to some great crappie action in
Wilson Bay of Gull Lake (see our
crappie hot spots) using a mister twister. As the
cabbage beds fill in the sunfish should move out to the 8-12
foot weed line. A Minnesota Vacation and sunfish, you cant
beat that!

The Bite Is On !
The slow start to the Walleye season seems to have turned
the corner. Fish are showing up in more and more of the
regular spots and the good news is that they are hungry. A
Lindy Rig with a chub seems to be the best bet but leeches
are also a good choice. On Gull Lake the majority of the
fish are in 14 to 20 feet of water with the somewhat deeper
fish tending to be a bit larger.
Bass are also doing very well on several of the area lakes.
A mushroom jig with a plastic worm such as a Berkley Power
Worm is a good choice. Most of the fish that I've been
finding are anywhere in the 6 to 12 foot range. Don't be
afraid to use a very slow presentation.
Good luck and stay safe

The
wind and rain didn't stop these Jackson Minnesota fishermen.
The Largemouth Bass Hot Spots took them right to the fish!
They cast frogs over the lily pads in Love Lake, and had a
great afternoon of fishing.
p.s. We trolled for walleyes for a couple of hours around
sunset last night. We caught 5 walleyes.
See you on the lake!

Fishing action in the Brainerd Lakes Resort Area remains
very good. The Gull Lake
Hot Spots continue to put out the fish. The Largemouth Bass
have been biting like crazy, and seem to be taking
everything from leaches to crawlers, and spinners to frogs.
The sizes have been pretty good as well, with many being
caught between 2 and 3 pounds. Sunfish have been hitting
hard as well on crawlers. Crappies are still biting fairly
well up in the Gull Narrows by the Zorbas Bridge, They are
being caught using a bobber and a crappie minnow. Walleyes
have still been being consistently caught on the Cinosam
flats using shiners and Lindy Rigs and also Shad Raps,
look for the walleyes to start moving out deeper as the
water temperature rises, but for right now with a cloudy
week everything is staying fairly shallow.
See you on the lake!

May 31,
2010
As of Saturday we have added Bass to the list of open
seasons. I was out with a group this morning and the action
was pretty much non-stop. Many of the fish were smaller
males but we had a number of nicer fish also. The main goal
was to keep one of the group members who was very new to
fishing interested and with lots of cooperation from the
fish that was not a problem.
Walleye fishing is starting to come around more and more
each day. The relatively slow start to the Walleye bite is
still a bit of a mystery but they are beginning to show more
interest.
The early Crappie bite which was fantastic is slowing some
as the fish finish their spawning and disperse to deeper
water. Many anglers spent a bit more time chasing Crappies
this spring when the Walleye seemed to have a case of
"lockjaw".
With the water temps warming up nicely we seem to be moving
quite quickly into more of a summer pattern for most of our
fishing. The good news with that is that both Bass and
Walleye will start to school up more and more and be found
in the usual locations. Right now it seems that a Red Tailed
Chub on a Lindy Rig is a good choice for the Walleye and a
Mushroom Jig Head with a 7" Berkley Power Worm will get the
attention of the Bass. As is usually the case a slow
presentation with the worm is generally the best.
Good luck and be safe

| Memorial Day May 31,
2010 |
The Memorial Day Weekend tradition of great fishing
continues. Our resort was booked and lots of vacationers
enjoyed a beautiful weekend in the Brainerd Lakes Area.
There were lots of trips to empty the garbage pail in the
fish cleaning house! Love Lake was producing Largemouth Bass
& Sunfish in the shallows. Leeches and pieces of
nightcrawlers were the meal ticket there. Crappies were
coming in from Love Lake, and the Bar Harbor area. Gull Lake
produced some 20 inch plus walleyes off the Cinosam flats.
Go Johnnies!

May 17, 2010
Another Walleye and Northern opener has come and gone with
mostly happy fishermen. The weather was as good as I can
remember for a very long time and the fish were at least
mildly cooperative on most of the area lakes. Gull Lake of
course was the center of a great deal of attention as it
always seems to be for opener. Walleye were being caught in
the greatest number on the north end of the lake. There were
several people I visited with that found some good fish
still in the channel near the Bar Harbor area. A couple of
people fishing off the pier near Zorbas did quite well early
Sat. morning. There were also fish being caught early in the
day in the Grassy Point area as well as The Hay Field. With
the clear skies and no real wind the bite was generally
early and then done.
Several people I visited with chose to go after Crappies
when the Walleye action slowed down and they too did well.
It looks as though the weather for this week will be more of
the same and the idea of Walleye early and Crappies as the
sun gets higher is not a bad plan at all esp. if there is
minimal wind to create a "Walleye Chop".
As far as bait I would certainly recommend Spot Tailed
Shiners on a Lindy Rig or jig. Having a few leeches along is
never a bad idea either.
Good luck and stay safe

May 16, 2010
Another Minnesota fishing opener has once again come and
gone, with beautiful weather and great results! Saturday
morning started a bit slow with the walleyes being caught on
Lindy Rigs topped with a spot tailed shiner, we found the
best spots to be near Rocky Point
and Dutchmans Bluff. Saturday
evening had a lot of action and some nice size walleyes to
go along with it we were trolling Sr-5 Shad Raps in 6-8 feet
on the edge of the drop-off in front of Gull Four Seasons
Resort, the action really picked up just as the sun was
setting. Sunday evening was again another attempt with Shad-
Raps, and again as the sun was getting low the walleye
action was getting high, the sizes were pretty good with a
few small ones scattered in with some nice eaters between
17-19 inches!
We will see you on the Lake!

| Gull Lake 2010 Fishing Opener
Forecast |
| |
May 1, 2010
The Walleye and Northern Pike openers are fast approaching
and it appears that lots of folks are more than ready. It
should be very interesting finding them with the much
earlier than usual spring we've enjoyed. I would suspect the
Walleyes will likely be a bit deeper than many openers but
likely in the mood to feed. In the meantime the Crappie and
Bluegill fishing continues to be very good on the warmer
days especially when we have moderate winds. On many of the
lakes it seems that the Crappie especially have moved from
the shallow little bays and channels and have begun to stage
near the areas that they will eventually spawn in. A small
jig fished below a bobber still seems to be the ticket. Last
week a friend and I were out and did very well. We used
Crappie minnows, wax worms and also tube jigs and it seemed
the fish didn't have a real huge favorite.
Good luck and remember to be safe.

April 10, 2010
The Crappie and Sunfish action is really starting to pick up
with the warmer temperatures and the warming waters in the
shallow bays and channels. The Bar Harbor area on the north
end of Gull Lake has been quite good especially in the early
morning hours. A small jig fished below a bobber with either
a Crappie Minnow or a Waxworm have both been working well.
If you're looking specifically for Crappies the minnow is
probably best. If Sunfish are also on your agenda a Waxworm
will attract both. Don't hesitate to go very small with your
jig choice.
With the early ice out we're actually getting a bit of
"bonus time" this spring. Often we would still be looking at
ice this time of year. As the waters warm I would expect
fish to start showing up in more and more areas and the bite
to improve also.
Good luck and stay safe

The Ice is out on Gull Lake!
The Ice went out overnight, after being
pushed hard by strong south winds. The earliest ice out was
missed by a day (April 2, 2000) last year the ice went out
on April 23.

The ice has gone out on Round Lake this afternoon. The ice
on Gull Lake is piling up on Sandy Point & the north shore
of Gull Lake. There is out about 1 mile of water in front of
the resort.

The amazing weather continues in the Brainerd Lakes Area of
Minnesota! After the strong south winds yesterday the
Highway 371 Bay of North Long Lake went out this morning.
Round Lake of the Gull Lake Chain has 60% plus of ice cover.
There is about 80 feet of water in front of the resort. The
ice on Gull Lake moved about 100 feet yesterday piling up
somewhat on the north shore. Fishing can't be too far away
now!

March 27th 2010
All indications are that we're headed for a super early ice
out this year. There are a few hardy anglers that are
already fishing from the docks at Bar Harbor and Zorbaz on
the Upper Gull channels. This morning however a south wind
and some floating ice put the end to the Bar Harbor docks
for at least a short time. It won't be long and we'll be in
the boats chasing the Crappies. What ice we have left in the
area is extremely hazardous. It is time to put the ice auger
away till next season.

Feb. 11 2010
Again the age old question
. . . If winter is here can spring be far behind?
For the most part the ice
fishing is winding down. We can still expect some good
Crappie and Sunfish action right up until the ice is no
longer safe to venture out on. Still, most of the locals you
visit with are gearing up for spring and open water.
My hope is for an early ice
out and several weeks of good early season Crappie action.
Last year the south end of Gull was very good, but the bite
was quite late. We were still finding Crappie in the
shallows right into early June. Of course that took quite a
bit of pressure off them due to the fact that many anglers
had turned their attention to Walleye fishing.
Think Spring!
